Belt and Road construction positive to regional and global economies: survey

BEIJING, Nov. 3 (China Economic Net)— Over 60 percent of respondents from 12 countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) recognize its positive significance to regional and global economies, said a report released on the Chinese Enterprise Global Image Summit 2020 held Tuesday.

According to the Belt and Road Edition of the Chinese Enterprise Global Image Survey Report, Thailand had the best perception among the surveyed countries, with 77 percent of respondents expressing a positive impression of the Belt and Road construction to the regional and global economies. That was followed by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan each with 73 percent of surveyed respondents.

Addressing the summit, Peng Huagang, secretary-general of the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of China’s State Council, called on the Chinese enterprises to resolutely implement the high-quality development requirement for jointly building the Belt and Road.

“Under the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, Chinese enterprises should construct and operate well a batch of high-quality cooperation projects and make the high-quality construction achievements benefit more countries and people,” added Peng.

The report showed the most recognized role of Belt and Road construction is in promoting the economic and trade cooperation and strengthening infrastructure connectivity among countries involved in BRI.

Among the respondents, 37 percent thought Belt and Road construction is helpful in "investment and trade cooperation”; 35 percent “infrastructure connectivity” and 33 percent "deepening mutual cooperation among countries."

The survey also showed that 45 percent of respondents expected the Belt and Road construction to play a bigger role in strengthening infrastructure connectivity.

While, 44 percent of respondents wished it to better ensure unimpeded trade. About one third of respondents thought Belt and Road construction can facilitate trade and investment and drive the economic and trade development of China and their countries.

Sci-tech innovation took the third place, as 40 percent of surveyed made the choice. About 26 percent of respondents hoped that a joint science and technology innovation action plan can be implemented in their own countries. About 27 percent of respondents expected Belt and Road construction to promote the construction of information and communication facilities and improve the network interconnection level between China and their countries.

The report noted that Chinese enterprises played a positive role in the surveyed countries’ economic development in three aspects, namely, bringing in cutting-edge technologies, capital input and jobs creation.

The respondents from Belt and Road countries looked forward to cooperating with Chinese enterprises in science and technology, accounting for 50 percent, manufacture (38 percent) and infrastructure construction (36 percent).

In terms of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the report showed that 70 percent of respondents spoke positively of Chinese enterprises for assisting their local people in combating COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 60 percent of surveyed thought that Chinese enterprises did well in poverty alleviation in the host countries. About 55 percent thought that Chinese enterprises “supported the development of education, medical care and public health for their own countries.”

The survey was conducted in 12 B&R countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America in the form of answering online questionnaires from July to September 2020.
