Elekta, a cancer care device and solution provider based in Stockholm, Sweden, has drawn the attention of attendees at the ongoing third China International Import Expo by showcasing a series of cutting-edge intelligent radiotherapy products and systems.

It exhibits advanced information systems and innovative facilities.

One of them is Elekta's unity facility, the company's star exhibit, that made its debut in the first CIIE in 2018, will be officially marketed in China this year after undergoing yearlong clinical trials.

It received approval from the National Medical Products Administration on Aug 20.

The machine is the "world's first high-field magnetic resonance-guided adaptive linear accelerator", according to Elekta.

It combines a magnetic resonance imaging scanner and linear accelerator radiation therapeutic technology in one system, previously thought nearly impossible.

Such a breakthrough in innovation allows the machine to reshape dosages based on daily changes in shape, size and position of the tumor and its surrounding healthy tissues, and then enables accurate dose delivery with real-time visualization of the tumor. It can also realize personalized treatment, the company said.

Global purchase orders and installation contracts of the unity facility now total 75, of which five have been used in clinical trials on the Chinese mainland by tumor hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, Shandong and Sichuan provinces.

Li Yexiong, director with the radiation oncology department of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, said the machine is an exciting innovation for it effectively improves the accuracy of tumor recognition while causing less damage to normal tissues during treatment.

The third CIIE is being held from Nov 5 to 10 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai, with a total exhibition area covering 360,000 square meters.

The average exhibition area of Fortune Global 500 companies is up 14 percent from last year.

"The CIIE is the first import-themed State-level exhibition in the world, and China has always firmly supported trade liberalization and economic globalization in opening its market to the world," said Gong Anming, executive vice-president of Elekta China.

"Elekta, which has been in the Chinese market for over 30 years, is a longtime advocate of the concept and has also benefited from it for years.

"We are very optimistic about the potential of Chinese markets and also believe that the CIIE can serve as a bridge linking Elekta's advanced technologies with the increasing need for upgraded medical devices in China," Gong added.

The Swedish company also participated in the first and second sessions of the expo.

"We have never stopped making efforts in localized research and innovation in China, and hope to take part in every session of the expo in the future, to help more medical counterparts learn about our products and bring the latest treatment methods to Chinese patients," he said.

During last year's event, Elekta welcomed more than 10,000 attendees in its exhibition area, including high-ranking Chinese officials from the central, provincial and municipal governments, and a group of Chinese hospital directors, professionals and industry insiders. It also signed dozens of letters of intent on-site. Established in 1972, the company has 40 offices globally, including four in China, and provides services to more than 6,000 hospitals and medical institutions in over 120 countries and regions.

It has also inked partnerships with medical organizations worldwide to train talents in cancer radiotherapy to better fulfill its social responsibilities.
