More than 2,000 people participated in a running and walking race which was established in ethnic Mongolian custom nearly 800 years ago on Sunday in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The 2020 Inner Mongolia Xanadu Guiyouchi Race, the fourth of its kind, took place at the Zhenglan Banner of the Xilingol League, where the UNESCO World Heritage site of Xanadu is located.

Xanadu was one of the two major capitals during the Yuan dynasty nearly 800 years ago.

The participants, led by Pan Jinhong, winner of the women's marathon at China's eighth National Games, took part in the three events, including the 16km running competition, as well as the 4.5km and 16km brisk walking events.

Results were only provided to participants themselves as organizers said they emphasize participation rather than rankings.

Guiyouchi is a Chinese transliteration of a Mongolian word referring to a long-distance running race organized during the Yuan dynasty, as Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, placed great importance on the physical fitness of his troops, and in 1287 began arranging daily endurance runs for them.
