Pakistan and China show strong will to agricultural cooperation: experts

BEIJING, Nov. 19 (China Economic Net) – In the Q&A of the webinar on China-Pakistan Agricultural Cooperation and Prospects, both Pakistani and Chinese experts answered questions from guests. They delivered strong will to agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and China.

In order to tap agricultural cooperation potential between China and Pakistan in the fields of seed industry, agricultural product processing and agricultural investment, under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, China Economic Net, in collaboration with the IPDS and The Express Tribune, under the guidance of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan and the Pakistani Embassy in China, organized a webinar on China-Pakistan Agricultural Cooperation and Prospects on November 19, 2020.

The first question raised by a Pakistani guest is that will the Chinese government engage the private sector in Pakistan G2B. Zhang Qin, Vice President of China National Seed Association answered, the Chinese government encourages private enterprises to enter into international cooperation in the seed industry. She also gave an example of Biocentury Transgene (China) Co., Ltd, a private enterprise, which has entered Pakistan and cooperated with Pakistani local enterprises.

The second question, is there any favorable policy for Chinese breeding research in Pakistan, was raised by a Chinese seed company. Muhammad Azeem Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC), confirmed that under CPEC Phase II, the Pakistani government would like to provide facilities to Chinese agricultural enterprises, including opportunities, funding and so on.

At the end of the webinar, Zhang Rui, Director of Center for Molecular Biology of Crops, Biotechnology Research Institute, CAAS, answered a question about how to improve Pakistani agricultural products including cotton, rice, and vegetables. She said China leads the world in crop research and development. For example, China has helped increase the yield of rice in Pakistan by 38%. In terms of cotton, China's gene research on insect-resistant cotton will promote the development of the cotton industry in Pakistan. In addition, Chinese seed enterprises will give great support to Pakistani agricultural production in many respects, including breeding, scientific research and industrialization.
