China's central budget has earmarked 2.68 billion yuan (41 million U.S. dollars) to support the development of red tourism, or revolution-themed tourism, during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), according to a press conference on Wednesday.
The past five years also saw China introduce a development outline for the sector and a national list of 300 classic red tourism sites, Luo Chenjuan, an official with the National Development and Reform Commission, told the press conference.
Red tourism refers to tourist attractions featuring fights by the Chinese people for national independence.
The increasing visits to red tourism scenic spots this year amid the COVID-19 epidemic showed the development and popularity of such spots in China, said Li Qun, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism.
To celebrate the centenary of the Communist Party of China, a series of activities featuring red tourism will be launched next year, according to Shan Gangxin, an official with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Enditem
