Gross mischaracterisation of conversation: Pakistani official
The Office of the National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf on August 30, local time, in a statement demanded British newspaper The Times a retraction for their "gross mischaracterization" of the conversation.
A formal demand has been sent to the newspaper by the Pakistan High Commission in the UK.
Yusuf has been getting the world to recognize the Taliban and start working with them, warning that otherwise they will face a giant humanitarian crisis and drive Afghanistan's new rulers into more extreme behaviour, such as allowing in foreign terrorists, the British publication's story said.
In the interview, Yusuf was quoted as saying "Engagement is the only way - engagement today. To ensure the Taliban remain moderate - and the incentive for that is legitimacy and assistance only the West can provide."
