Japanese electronics maker Seiko Epson is showcasing its cutting-edge technologies and environmentally friendly solutions at the ongoing China International Import Expo.

It is the second time Epson has attended the CIIE. Since it first attended the event in 2020, it has increased sales of its innovative products in China.

Epson's PaperLab, a dry fiber new papermaker, was exhibited at the third CIIE in November 2020. It's being displayed again at the ongoing CIIE, since now it has passed various audits and is officially launched in the Chinese market, hoping to bring green experiences to Chinese users.

"We are looking forward to making contributions to eco-friendly development via our technology and product innovation through the CIIE this year," said Akihiro Fukaishi, president of Epson China.

Two other categories of products and solutions, serving China's traditional cultural inheritance and digital manufacturing, are being displayed at the CIIE this year.

A light show themed "Meeting Dunhuang" is showcasing rich Chinese historical and cultural elements using Epson's high brightness laser projectors. Also, adopting digital tools including digital-printing technology, the striking and magnificent architecture of Dunhuang culture is displayed.

Another theme of Epson's CIIE exhibition centers on digital manufacturing with robots, and showcases the company's efforts to help digital market transformation.

In recent years, the Chinese government has vigorously promoted new infrastructure construction, so Epson is keen on providing solutions to the construction of smart factories through its high-precision robots.

Epson's research and development on robot technologies has been carried out together with its Chinese partners and so understands the needs of customers and market demands.

One example is in the production of smartphones. There are dozens of screws in smartphones and these screws need to be tightened one by one. Each screw is of a different size, so the strength and torque required for screwing are different, which makes the operation far from easy.

Through repeated attempts with its partners, Epson has developed a robot specializing in dealing with screws.

In March, Epson announced its Environmental Vision 2025, a long-term blueprint echoing the Chinese government's resolution in realizing peaking emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

In the long-term vision, the company focuses on three key areas: environmental protection, digital transformation and co-creation.

The company has pledged to achieve negative carbon dioxide emissions and zero consumption of underground resources-especially from nonrenewable resources such as oil and metals-by 2050.

The effort will see further investment in decarbonization, resource recycling, environmental technology development and reduced consumption through products and solutions.

"The main reason for doing this is to let the enterprise return to its origin, that is, to redefine our corporation value and significance of existence, which is to solve the problems encountered by society and customers with our innovative technology," Fukaishi said.

By 2023, Epson hopes to use renewable energy capable of providing 100 percent of the power demand for the whole group. The company announced it will invest 100 billion yen ($876.2 million) in environmental-related projects in the next decade.

Last year, Epson entered into more than 500 cooperation intentions, including from private enterprises, governments and State-owned enterprises.

Senior government officials and provincial government leaders visited Epson's booth and shared their expertise with staff members.

In terms of COVID-19, Fukaishi said he believes China is undoubtedly the most powerful country in the world in terms of taking fast and effective measures in epidemic prevention and control.

Moreover, the pandemic has brought the company opportunities in terms of new demands.

Many people work or study at home and many children need to print homework at home due to online classes, which has led to explosive growth in the sale of home-use printers.

"Due to the outbreak, now we see a more decentralized trend in society and all walks of life. Our products and technologies were designed to better meet these new changes in fields such as infrastructure construction, education and improvement of livelihood," Fukaishi said.

Epson has a lofty goal-to create a sustainable society that connects people, things and information through "efficient, compact, and precision technologies and digital technology"-so as to make the world a more harmonious and beautiful place, Fukaishi said.
