President Xi Jinping has called for more efforts to safeguard national political security, social stability and people's peaceful lives so that the public will feel the fairness and justice around them.
Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the comment in a recent instruction for the nation's political and legal work. The instruction was conveyed at a central conference on Saturday.
Calling on those involved in political and legal work to uphold the absolute leadership of the CPC and draw wisdom and strength from the Party's century-long struggle, Xi urged them to promote the ability to forestall and defuse major risks and improve law enforcement and judicial policies and measures.
Efforts should be made to provide a strong guarantee for advancing the Peaceful China initiative and promoting the rule of law at a higher level, thus welcoming the 20th CPC National Congress, Xi said. Endeavors should be made to ensure fair access to justice for every individual, he said.
The central conference on the political and legal work is customarily conducted at the beginning of the year to outline work in the sector for the coming year.
Chen Yixin, secretary-general of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, said on Sunday while concluding the two-day conference that officials attending the meeting had reached consensus on four aspects: what has been achieved, what the current situation is, what should be done this year and what subjects should be further studied.
He said that guaranteeing a smooth national congress of the CPC is a key task this year. Measures to maintain security and stability should be upgraded, and law enforcement and legal credibility should be improved. The rule of law should be carried forward to safeguard healthy economic and social development, and the self-examination campaign will continue to help ensure the loyalty and responsibility of the team.
Additionally, more research should be conducted on domestic and international situations. Studies on balancing relations between development and security, online and offline work, supervision from the public and self-reform are also necessary, Chen said.
The country is still facing a complicated situation in this regard, mainly in seven aspects: external interference; the COVID-19 pandemic; global inflation; risks in political security; financial security; social and public security; and some untraditional security challenges, Chen said.
He added that officials who attended the meeting agreed that since the 19th CPC National Congress in 2017, effective explorations have been made in 10 areas, such as to fully implement the Xi Jinping Thought on the Rule of Law and uphold the leadership of the CPC; to take the initiative to ensure political security; to launch a three-year campaign against organized crime; to modernize the social governance system and capability; and to conduct an education and rectification campaign on the political and legal work front to ensure the team's good performance.
