Sales of pickup trucks in China saw a decline in the first month of this year, industry data showed.

A total of 42,000 units of pickup trucks were sold in January, down 12 percent year on year, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

On a month-on-month basis, pickup truck sales dropped 29 percent from December 2021.

The country's recent lackluster housing market has subdued the consumer demand for pickup trucks, the association said, adding that the pickup truck sales will be under pressure.

The association, however, remains bullish on the future performance of the pickup truck market, expecting a demand rebound thanks to the ebbing of the recent COVID-19 resurgence, the development of a "pickup truck culture" in China, and automakers' efforts to boost pickup truck consumption.

Previous data from the association showed that some 550,000 units of pickup trucks were sold in China in 2021, up 14 percent from a year earlier.
