Greek ship owners dominate shipping industries
By George Georgios
The fleet of Greek ship owners consisted of 4,110 ships, with a total capacity of 349.2 million dwt and 204.3 million gt , according to the updated report of the Hellenic Maritime Cooperation Committee of London (Committee).
The research, which was based on data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, showed that in March 2023 ,the fleet of Greek ship owners has slightly reduced by 30 ships, 6.1 million dwt and 5.7 million gt year-on-year.
It is noted that these figures do not include the 199 ships, with a capacity of 15.4 million dwt and 12.6 million gt, which are currently on order from Greeks at the shipyards.
Greek ships represent 6.7% of the world fleet in terms of number of ships, 13.1% in terms of gt tonnage and 15.3% in terms of dwt tonnage.
The Greeks dominate tankers, dry bulk carriers and liquefied natural gas carriers. In March 2023 specifically, Greek-owned tankers correspond to 24.4% of the international fleet in terms of number of ships and 23.7% in terms of dwt tonnage.
At the same time, Greek ore/bulk carriers represent 15.8% of those traveling the seas today in number and 18.1% in terms of dwt tonnage.
Finally, in liquefied natural gas ships, the Greek-owned fleet holds 10.5% of the world in number of ships and 13.9% in dwt capacity.
Younger than the global fleet
It is noted that the average age of the Greek-owned fleet increased slightly on an annual basis, but remains 4.6 years lower than the average age of the global fleet.
In particular, the age of Greek ships reaches 13.2 years in number of ships compared to 17.8 years of the international fleet. In terms of gt and dwt tonnage, the ages of domestic ships both reach 11.4 years, compared to 12.7 and 12.4 respectively for ships globally.
