Back to normal the traffic of TEUs from Piraeus port
by Paris Tsirigotis
The handling of containers in Piraeus in April 2023 was satisfactory, according to port officials. They attributed this in part to the normalization of conditions in the supply chain.
However, analysts in the container market are cautious, arguing that international trade has not yet achieved the stability necessary for the market's success. As they point out, the global economy is still characterized by the complicated situation of rising inflation, as well as by sharp imbalances in trade flows between different regions of the world.
According to data published by Cosco Shipping Ports, in April 2023, a total of 369.2 thousand containers were handled from piers II and III of the Piraeus Container Station compared to 296.6 thousand in the same month of 2022, an increase of 24.5%.
Between January and April 2023 container traffic increased by 1.8% compared to the same period in 2022. A total of 1.420 million containers were handled in the first quarter of this year, compared to 1.394 million in the corresponding quarter of 2022.
The total container handling in April 2023 at the 35 ports managed by Cosco Shipping Ports, a member of the Cosco Shipping Group, excluding subsidiaries, increased compared to April 2022, with a positive trend, showing recovery.
