Controlled explosions by IDF in S. Lebanon cause false quake alert across N. Israel
JERUSALEM, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli military's Home Front Command on Saturday instructed hundreds of thousands of residents in northern Israel to rush to open spaces in response to an earthquake alert, which turned out to be false.
The quake warning system was activated throughout northern Israel, extending from the Lebanese border south to Israel's coastal city of Caesarea and north to the West Bank.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Geological Survey of Israel, the warning system mistakenly identified controlled explosions conducted by the IDF in southern Lebanon as an earthquake, issuing an alert.
Several Israeli media outlets indicated that the IDF was likely targeting a Hezbollah tunnel in southern Lebanon when the explosions took place.
