NEW DELHI, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- India has lifted a 4-year-long ban on exports of wheat and wheat products in a bid to boost farmers' incomes, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced in an official notification.

The ban was imposed in May 2022. The export policy of wheat was revised from prohibited to free with immediate effect, the DGFT's notification said.

The lifting of the ban was significant, as the federal government claimed there were enough stocks of the commodity in the country and that it was a step toward encouraging the farming community to increase wheat production in the coming years.

As per official figures, India produced nearly 120.65 million tonnes of wheat during the country's crop year 2025-26 (July 2025-June 2026), about 2.3 percent more than the previous crop year.

Commenting on the decision to lift the ban, the country's Food and Public Distribution Secretary Sanjeev Chopra reportedly said that since the domestic prices of wheat were currently depressed, allowing exports of wheat and wheat products would increase the domestic prices, thus boosting farmers' incomes, and also encourage good sowing in the forthcoming season.
