Four days into China's National Day holiday, the figure that will dominate the coverage has already arrived. Chinese railways carried 25.2 million passengers on October 1, the most ever recorded in a single day, and the Ministry of Transport expects 2.13 billion cross-regional trips before the week is out.

Those numbers describe a country in motion.

Trip.com Group's figures make the point plainly. Hotel bookings of seven nights or more are up 123 percent year on year, and the average trip now runs past nine days. Many workers have joined the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day with a few days of leave, turning two short breaks into one of 13 days. Bookings covering several destinations have risen 84 percent. The fastest-growing domestic flight destinations are Qingdao, Lhasa and Kashgar; by rail they are Xiangxi, Zhangjiajie and Guilin.

China's railways are already adjusting to that pattern, adding 910 extra trains for short-haul demand as holidaymakers string together stops between scenic areas within the same region. The Yangtze River Delta network carried a record 4.427 million passengers on the opening day.

Xiangyang, a grain-producing city in northern Hubei, is hosting this year's Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival, where visitors to Manyun Village try mechanical corn threshing and buy produce at the field's edge. In Hengfeng County, Jiangxi, a coal mine opened in 1958 has become a film production base after a Zhejiang company invested 200 million yuan; within months more than 3,000 local villagers had been hired as extras. A harvest that used to end at the grain depot, and a pit that stopped producing coal, now both sell an experience.

Cities are applying the same logic to entertainment. The box office reached 180 million yuan on October 1, but the more consequential change happens after the credits. In Zhejiang, movie ticket stubs unlock discounts at thousands of attractions, restaurants and shops. In Guangdong, cinemas sell travel packages with the ticket. A film has become a way of routing spending into the streets around the screen.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism's autumn campaign lists more than 20,000 cultural events and over 310 million yuan in vouchers and subsidies through the end of October. Beijing has set aside 250 billion yuan in ultra-long special treasury bonds for consumer trade-ins this year, after the 2025 programme generated more than 2.6 trillion yuan in sales. A 1-percentage-point subsidy on personal consumption loans has been extended through 2026 and widened to credit card instalments. Hainan, now under island-wide special customs operations, booked offshore duty-free sales up 25.7 percent in the first quarter.

Each measure lowers the cost of one specific decision, whether replacing an old appliance, financing a purchase or adding a stop to an itinerary. Their combined effect is to give households a reason to put savings into the quality of daily life rather than leave them idle.
