Manzhouli, Oct. 29 (China Economic Net) – At the Container Yard of Manzhouli Railway Station, freight trains linking China with Eurasian markets pause for a precisely choreographed operation. Here, containers move from Russian broad-gauge wagons onto Chinese standard-gauge tracks in a process that once relatively slow yet now runs with near-clockwork efficiency. Manzhouli’s Smart Land Port Offers Practical Lessons for Pakistan’s CPEC Trade Corridors.

“Foreign trains operate on a 1,520 mm broad gauge, while China runs on the standard 1,435 mm gauge,” explained Huang Xu, Assistant Political Affairs Officer of the Party Committee Office of Manzhouli Station under China Railway Harbin Bureau Group Co., Ltd. “Because rolling stock cannot proceed directly onto Chinese rails, every single return container must undergo an overhead gauge-change transfer.”

What was once a protracted bottleneck has become a showcase of automation. Officials say the full train transshipment process is now controlled within two hours from arrival to dispatch on standard-gauge track, with each individual container lifted, shifted, and secured in roughly two minutes. The specialized container terminal spans 500,000 square meters, including a core yard of 108,000 square meters. It is equipped with four broad-gauge and three standard-gauge tracks, six dedicated gantry cranes, and five front reach-stackers, supporting a maximum static storage capacity of 9,900 TEUs. Daily throughput allows the loading of 540 standard-gauge railcars and the unloading of 300 broad-gauge railcars within a 24-hour cycle.

He further demonstrates Manzhouli, China’s largest land border port since its opening in 1990s, operates an extensive network of 310 broad- and standard-gauge tracks stretching 220 kilometers across 18 specialized transshipment yards. Its comprehensive handling capacity stands at roughly 40 million tonnes annually, covering industrial imports such as timber, mineral ores, coal, grains, and fertilizers, as well as outbound electronics, machinery, and consumer goods. Following the completion of Phase I of its smart upgrade, the terminal has deployed electronic probes, 5G wireless networks, and intelligent sensors for real-time container tracking and yard coordination. Operations continue around the clock even through the severe sub-zero winters and heavy snows of the Hulunbuir grasslands.

These operational gains hold clear relevance for Pakistan as it advances connectivity under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Pakistan Railways primarily uses 1,676 mm broad-gauge tracks, while proposed links toward China and Central Asia are designed around the 1,435 mm standard gauge. Manzhouli’s rapid overhead transfer system demonstrates that gauge differences need not slow trade if containerization and synchronized crane automation are prioritized. Huang emphasized that Manzhouli is shifting from a pure transit-and-export model toward an integrated local processing economy. For Pakistan, which seeks to evolve CPEC from a transit corridor into Special Economic Zones at locations such as Rashakai, Dhabeji, and Bostan, the Chinese experience illustrates how dry ports can support value-addition, customs logistics zones, and manufacturing rather than merely facilitating sealed cargo passage.

Digitization offers another transferable lesson. Manzhouli’s use of 5G telemetry, optical scanning, and streamlined inspections shows how automated yard management could reduce demurrage and improve flows at Pakistani border terminals including Chaman, Torkham, and Taftan. As overland routes gain importance for resilient supply chains, Manzhouli’s high-speed transfer yards illustrate how targeted infrastructure upgrades can convert geographic and technical hurdles into reliable economic arteries an outcome Pakistan is actively pursuing across its own trade corridors.
