Latest figures from China's National Bureau of Statistics show that profits at China's industrial firms above designated size reached 6.03 trillion yuan in the first nine months of 2026, up 15.5 percent from a year earlier. Over the same months of 2025, growth was 3.2 percent.

Electronics profits doubled. That one sector supplied 9.6 of the 15.5 percentage points. Roughly six of every ten yuan of new industrial profit came from it.

Three details in the release explain how.

First, the money followed the data center. Profits in optical fiber manufacturing rose 570 percent and in optical cable 110 percent. Computer peripheral makers earned 280 percent more, complete-machine makers 170 percent more, and producers of electronic specialty materials 220 percent more, gains the NBS links to demand for AI computing power and advanced memory. Further upstream, copper and aluminum orders from AI and new-energy industries lifted nonferrous metals profits by 79.7 percent.

Second, high technology now earns more than its weight. High-tech manufacturing profits climbed 52 percent, 36.5 points faster than industry as a whole, and the sector’s share of all industrial profit rose to 25.5 percent from 19.3 percent a year earlier. Measured by output, high-tech manufacturing accounted for 18.3 percent of industrial value added over the same nine months. Less than a fifth of the output, a quarter of the profit. That gap is the market’s own verdict on where value in Chinese industry now sits.

Third, the gains reached well beyond the champions. Large enterprises grew profits 18.8 percent, medium-sized firms 15.4 percent and small firms 8.7 percent. Raw materials manufacturing rose 44.9 percent and added 5.9 points to overall growth; mining rose 38.2 percent and manufacturing as a whole 17 percent. A profit cycle carried by a handful of listed technology names would not show up in a small-firm ledger. This one does.

A careful reader will point to prices. Factory-gate prices rose 5 percent year on year in September, and miners gain when commodities climb. Price cycles lift ore and coal. They do not produce a 570 percent profit jump in optical fiber, and they do not explain an electronics boom that was already visible in spring, when the sector’s profits stood 103.9 percent higher over the first five months.

None of this happened apart from the wider economy. Industrial value added grew 5.3 percent in the first three quarters, GDP grew 4.6 percent, and manufacturing’s share of GDP rose to 25.7 percent, up 0.6 points. September output rose 5.5 percent, quicker than August. Equipment manufacturing, up 10.2 percent, now makes up 37.6 percent of industrial value added, and output of industrial robots climbed 29.1 percent. Manufacturing gained weight in the economy while its profit mix moved upmarket.
