The mainland Taiwan affairs chief on Saturday urged more cross-Strait communication, especially among ordinary citizens.

Zhang Zhijun, chief of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks while meeting with Taichung Mayor Jason Hu.

Zhang said that both sides have benefited from the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and Taichung has carried out various communications with mainland cities.

"Taichung is a famous historic and cultural city with specific city constructions especially in cultural creative industry," Zhang said. "We all felt the efforts made by Taichung people through the scenes along the route in the city."

During the meeting, Hu briefed Zhang on the city's economic, social and cultural development and accompanied him to a social welfare center.

Zhang started his four-day visit on Wednesday with a formal meeting in Taoyuan. In the following days, Zhang met with New Taipei City mayor Eric Chu, and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu.
