Russia will tighten security for this summer's world athletics championships following the Boston Marathon bombing, a high-ranking sports official said Tuesday.

"For Russia, this is a serious alarm. Of course, we would tighten security. We have very serious security conception," Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told a professional sports news agency.

Mutko noted the blasts in Boston would not affect the preparations for the Sochi Winter Olympics due next February, the Summer Universiade in Kazan and the World Athletics Championship in Moscow this summer.

"We will discuss with our colleagues these issues to avoid such situations," Mutko said, adding no one could guarantee 100 percent safety.

"The participants, the organizers (of sports events) are being undergone special search but there are the fans, the spectators remaining in the start and finish zones. A serious work must be done there," he said.

The two blasts happened at around 1900 GMT within seconds of each other near the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday, killing three people and injured more than 100.
