China foreign trade volume down 7.8% in Jan.

China's Ministry of Commerce, says the country's foreign trade volume in January was 272.6 billion US dollars, a fall of 7.8 percent year on year.

The information was released by Shen Danyang, spokesman for the ministry during a regular press conference in Beijing. Exports were down half a percent and imports off 15.3 percent. Shen said exports to emerging countries are growing at a fast pace, while exports to EU nations, which are mired in the debt crisis, are decreasing.

Around 1, 400 foreign companies have set up their business in China. That number has decreased 37.4 percent year on year. On the other hand, China's non-commercial investment overseas reached 43.7 billion US dollars last month, with a nearly 60 percent growth year on year.

The spokesman also said during the New Year and Spring Festival period, the sales volume at Chinas major retailers and catering businesses hit 470 billion yuan, a rise of 16 percent on 2011.
