Automakers eye growth in west China
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-31 00:00

The Chengdu Motor Show 2012, which opened yesterday, serves as a highway for automakers to penetrate western China, which still promises growth opportunities despite an overall slowdown in vehicle deliveries nationally.

With a theme of "Road to China's West," the auto show has come a long way from a mere regional gathering of car dealers to become the biggest car extravaganza in western China and a focus of competition among auto manufacturers seeking to explore inland to boost sales.

KPMG said there is still significant potential for growth in the market, in western China and small cities, which now have lower car penetration rates.

Deliveries of passenger cars and commercial vehicles nationwide rose 3.6 percent to just under 11 million units in the first seven months of this year, recovering from a double-digit fall in January.

The motor show is set to end on September 9.
