New probe results show Coca-Cola beverages cleared of contamination
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-20 22:48

The Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision (QTS) on Friday released new results of a recent investigation into the alleged contamination of Coca-Cola beverages.

The results showed the chlorine level of the allegedly contaminated beverages produced on Feb. 4 were 0.0046 mg/L, lower than that of purified drinking water of 0.005 mg/L.

On Tuesday, an anonymous employee of the company told local media that nine batches of beverage products had been contaminated with chlorine during a routine pipe maintenance procedure.

The report was disseminated online, leading some retailers to refuse to purchase products from the company. The company responded by denying the claim, stating that it would ensure its rights in accordance with the law.

The Food Quality Safety Supervision Testing Institute of Shanxi Province and the Shanxi Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Technology Center both conducted investigations on Tuesday, concluding that the chlorine levels of the nine allegedly contaminated batches were found to be lower than that of purified drinking water.

However, the samples that were tested were taken from products produced between Feb. 5 and 8. Beverages produced on Feb. 4 were not tested in the previous investigation as no products stored in the company.

The QTS bureau found the beverages (Fanta Orange) produced on Feb. 4 in the market, and then took it to analyses on Wednesday afternoon, said Chang Gaocai, head of the bureau.

"To strengthen food safety and supervision and satisfy the public, the Shanxi QTS organized a team on Wednesday to investigate the incident at Coca-Cola Shanxi Beverages Co., Ltd.," said Chang.

According to the Shanxi QTS, the nine batches in question were used to produce 121,058 cases of beverages between Feb. 4 and 8. As of Tuesday, 76,391 cases have been sold, while the rest remain in the company's hands.
