Xinjiang in stable conditions: official
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-05 17:00

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China is in stable conditions in spite of sporadic violent cases, a local official said Monday.

Li Zhi, vice chairman of of the Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People's Congress, said there is nothing to worry about in Xinjiang, though it is seemingly considered to be a "sensitive region."

Li is in Beijing to participate in this year's annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.

Xinjiang is home to 21 million members of the Uygur ethnic minority. The region has been battling separatism, extremism and terrorism for decades, and security experts worry growing religious extremism in the region has fanned most of the violent attacks.

Li said the regional government respects the religious and ethnic habits of local people, and never limits their religious freedom.
