Survival chance slim for 17 trapped miners in NE China
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-03-30 19:24

Rescuers said Friday that the 17 miners trapped after a coal mine accident in northeast Liaoning Province have little chance of survival, but rescue work was still underway.

A gas blast occurred at the Dahuang No. 2 Coal Mine in the city of Liaoyang last Thursday, killing at least five people and trapping 17. High levels of carbon monoxide and other gases have hampered rescue efforts, according the rescue headquarters.

An investigation carried out by the Public Security Bureau of Liaoyang shows that the mine illegally re-opened after being ordered to shut for a safety overhaul. The mine boss fled after the accident which hampered the rescue effort.

The mine owner and three managers were arrested on Wednesday.
