"(China) is ready to work together with all the sides involved, including the Arabian nations, to play an active and constructive role," he added.

Hong reiterated that China did not attend a Friends of Syria conference last week as the aim, effect and mechanism of the conference had not been further studied.

In response to a question on U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's criticisms of China and Russia's stance on Syria, Hong said China "cannot accept it at all," adding that China always upholds a fair and impartial position.

"China always decides its stance on Syria with a view to safeguarding peace and stability of Syria and the Middle East as well as the long-term and fundamental interests of the Syrian people and other Arabian people," said the spokesman.

"We suggest that the Syrian people's own choice should be respected and outsiders should not impose any so-called Syrian solution to Syria or the Syrian people," he added.
