China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin has joined other senior leaders in calling for more efforts to stabilize economic growth and accelerate economic restructuring.

Jia's latest remarks came in his inspection tour of northern Hebei province from July 12-18, during which he visited enterprises, villages, ports as well as industrial parks.

"The economy of our country is generally in a stable and healthy condition, but with huge downward pressure," Jia said.

He said the country should view stabilizing economic growth as a more outstanding task and work to ensure that the goals concerning social and economic development are achieved this year.

China's gross domestic product expanded 7.6 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2012, marking the slowest pace in three years amid sluggish demand at home and abroad.

To boost development of agriculture and increase farmers' income, local authorities should concentrate on grain production, improve the construction of infrastructure for agriculture, particularly water resources projects, Jia noted.

He urged the strengthening of scientific and technological innovation to upgrade China's industries and boost the competitiveness of the country's emerging strategic industries.

Meanwhile, local authorities should increase their efforts in facilitating the economic integration of Beijing and Tianjin municipalities and Hebei province, Jia said.
