Egypt announces procedures for presidential elections
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-31 04:44

Egypt Monday unveiled detailed procedures for the presidential polls as part of preparations for the historic vote in June, state media reported.

Any party with seats in the two houses of parliament has the right to nominate its candidate for the coming presidential elections, according to the presidential election law.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued the law on the organizational procedures of the presidential elections on Jan. 19, Assistant Minister of Defense and SCAF member Mamdouh Shahin said on Monday.

The presidential candidate must win support of 30 members in the parliament or 30,000 citizens from 15 different governorates, the website of official Al-Ahram newspaper said.

The law also stipulated the nominee and his parents should carry the Egyptian nationality and are not married to a foreigner.

The presidential polls are to be run in one day or could be prolonged for two days under judicial supervision if necessary.

The Presidential Elections Commission (PEC) will start work next week, head of the Supreme Constitutional Court and PEC chief Farouk Sultan said on Monday.

"All preparations for the presidential elections will begin as of next week," official MENA news agency quoted Sultan as saying.

The presidential elections will be held in mid June, as the SCAF has pledged to transfer power before June 30. But no exact date has been announced.

Egypt has elected the new People's Assembly (lower house of parliament), with Islamist parties occupying around 70 percent of its seats. The vote for the Shura Council, or the upper house, started on Sunday and will end on Feb. 22.
