Egypt accuses some NGOs of conducting political activities
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-09 16:03

Egyptian judges said on Wednesday the activities of some non-governmental organizations in Egypt were not for human rights but political, as the country plans to try 43 workers of the NGOs over illegal activities.

Investigations showed 67 evidences about the involvement of the accused people in illegal foreign funding of NGOs, judges Sameh Abu Zeid and Ashraf el-Ashmaawi told reporters on Wednesday.

The evidences include witnesses' testimonies, technical evidences and other documents.

The investigations showed that five accused NGOs were not for human rights but they are international organizations with branches all over the world. The activities of these organizations were political and not related to the human rights field, said Abu Zeid.

The accused people did not respect Egyptian laws as they worked in Egypt via tourist visas and received orders from abroad to work in this way, added Abu Zeid. The organizations also violated tax laws.

The inspection of the NGOs offices found cash money, cheques and financial transfers, according to Abu Zeid.

The national security bodies had refused to give work permits to these organizations' branches. However, they practiced their activities in Egypt, he said.

The foreign funding has increased after the Jan. 25 to Feb. 11 mass protests last year which toppled former President Hosni Mubarak. These organizations took a new trend to affect the political process in Egypt, the judges said.

Egypt on Monday released the names of all 43 suspects, which included foreigners and Egyptians, whom the country plans to bring to justice over the illegal funding.

They will be charged with running and establishing branches of foreign organizations and receiving foreign funds and spending them on their activities without permission from Egyptian government, the official MENA news agency reported.

Egypt also issued a travel ban for these people. Some of the suspects are at large outside Egypt.
