Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-06 21:41

The Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) has called the military junta in the western African state of Mali to honor its weekend declaration for the reinstatement of the constitution and restoration of people's power.

In a statement issued here at the closure of the six-day conference on Thursday, the IPU demanded that the junta honor it's commitment to restore the country's constitution of 1992 to pave way for a transition leading to the presidential election.

The IPU was on Thursday supposed to officially suspend Mali's membership from the global body, but the move was halted following the Junta reinstatement of the constitution on Sunday.

"When we started, the executive had stated to suspend Mali. But following the developments in the country, we have today (Thursday) deferred the suspension," said Anders Johnson, IPU Secretary General at media briefing here.

"The Junta has made commitment to restore the constitution. There are prospects of restoration of democratic rule. We ask the military junta to restore constitutional order and relinquish power to Parliament immediately. We call for immediate end of fighting," he said at joint meeting briefing with IPU president, Abdelwahad Radi, and Uganda's Parliament Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga.

"We have been monitoring on the situation in Mali on hourly basis. We are aware of the decisions and changes coming up," said Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda's Parliament speaker and the presiding president of the 126th IPU assembly.

On Sunday, the junta reinstated the country's constitution of 1992 to pave the way for a transition leading to the presidential election, without clarifying who would head the transition and when to hold the polls.

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni while opening the 126th IPU assembly said the young military fellows should return back to the barracks and let the Malian people decide their future.

The Malian military troops on March 22 toppled President Amadou Toumani Toure.

In the statement, the lawmakers called upon the international community to back the decisions taken by Economic Community of West African States heads of state to restore peace, democracy and the rule of law and the integrity of its territory.

The Africa Union, a continental body that brings together 54 African countries last week suspended the West African country after the coup.

The IPU conference which started here on Saturday discussed the political, economic and social situation in the world under the theme; "Parliaments and people: bridging the gap."
