Egypt's electoral commission on Tuesday disqualified former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik from running in the presidential election, after the approval of a bill to bar ex-regime officials from politics.

The law, passed by the parliament recently, was approved by the ruling military council on Monday. It bans former regime figures from exercising their political rights in the next 10 years.

The political isolation law targets those who worked as president, vice president or premier within the last 10 years prior to former President Hosni Mubarak's fall in February 2011.

The latest decision by the Higher Presidential Elections Commission made former Foreign Minister and Arab League chief Amr Moussa one of the few competitive secular candidates.

The list of presidential candidates will be announced on Thursday. Ten out of a total of 23 have been disqualified due to various reasons. The presidential vote is scheduled for May 23 and 24, with the run-off on June 16 and 17. A power transfer to a civilian government is due by June 30.
