Ghanaian president visits plane crash scene
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-04 03:46

Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills on Sunday visited the scene of the cargo plane crash near the El-Wak Stadium in the capital Accra.

Accompanied by his Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman and some other state officials, the somber looking president consoled relatives of occupants of a mini-van who were killed in the crash on Saturday night.

Mills also commended the prompt response of the emergency services after the Boeing 727-200 cargo plane run by Allied Air crashed into the mini-van. He assured bereaved families of his government's assistance in their moment of grief.

He directed the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to institute measures to forestall of a repeat of such incidents in future.

Mills also went to the Aviation Clinic, where the four crew members were receiving treatment.

A five-member committee has been inaugurated to ascertain the cause of the crash. The committee has 30 days to submit its report to Minister of Transport Collins Dauda, according to a local radio station.

An incident of the kind last occurred on June 5, 2000, when a Ghana Airlink F27-600 operated by Ghana Air Force as a civil airline crashed on landing at the Kotoka International Airport. The aircraft reportedly touched down nose first and the fuselage broke in two, killing six of the 52 occupants on board.
