Egyptian parliament elects Constitution Assembly
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-06-13 09:17

The Egyptian parliament on Tuesday elected a 100 member Constitution Assembly (CA) tasked with writing a new constitution amid continuous calls from the military and political powers to form an assembly which could represent all segments of the society.

According to a final list of those elected published on the website of local Ahram newspaper, a number of 16 CA members were from the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), while 10 from Salafists' Nour Party.

Around 670 MPs from the People's Assembly (lower house) and Shura Council (upper house) chose 100 CA members and 50 backups from a list of 1,310 candidates.

Former presidential candidates Mohamed Selim al-Awa, Amr Moussa, Abul-Fotouh and Hamdain Sebahi were included in the candidates' list. Meanwhile, a number of journalists, media figures, judges and lawyers were also listed.

After two months of talks, Egyptians have reached a consensus about the CA, Speaker of the Shura Council Ahmed Fahmy said before the elections, asserting that the parliament was keen on the fair representation of all segments of society in the CA.

However, a number of independent MPs and several political parties like the Revolution Continues Alliance, Karama Party, Egyptian Democratic Party, Tagammu Party, Free Egyptians Party withdrew from the elections before it began, saying it marginalized several segments of the Egyptian people.

Head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi on June 5 called for consensus over the criteria of CA within two days, or a supplementary constitutional declaration would be announced.

The People's Assembly had elected a 100-member CA in March. But the MB and Salafists dominated the body, sparking fierce opposition from secular parties. The assembly was later suspended by an administrative court.
