Egypt's head of military council meets Clinton
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-16 08:04

Head of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi held talks Sunday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is on a two-day visit to Egypt.

The meeting talked about the latest developments in Egypt and the whole region as well as ways to boost bilateral relations. Clinton asserted that the United States highlights its bilateral relations with Egypt, which serves as a strategic ally of the United States in the region.

The meeting was attended by some SCAF members and U.S. ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson.

Clinton also met some prominent Egyptian Christian figures in the U.S. embassy in Cairo.

During a ceremony for inaugurating the U.S. consulate in Egypt' s northern coastal city of Alexandria, Clinton denied that the United States supports any particular party or faction at the expense of others, asserting that it deals with the leadership elected by the people.

She affirmed her country's support to real democracy, adding that "democracy doesn't exist in constitution but in people's hearts and minds."

The U.S. official reiterated that true democracy means the right to live and work, and freedom for both men and women in one society, noting that it does not mean imposing certain ideology or thoughts of one person or party over the others.

On Saturday afternoon, Clinton held talks with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to boost bilateral relations.

They reportedly discussed Egypt's transition process and ways to boost bilateral relations, in addition to regional issues such as the Syrian crisis and the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

Clinton arrived in Egypt's capital Cairo on Saturday for a two- day visit. She is so far the most senior U.S. official to visit Egypt after Morsi assumed presidency on June 30.
