Egyptian president names new heads of air, naval forces
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-15 07:13

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi appointed Tuesday new commanders of air defense, naval and air forces in the latest military leadership reshuffle.

Major General Abdel Mounim Ibrahim Bayyoumi el-Tarras was named commander of air defense, Osama el-Gendy commander of naval force and Younis el-Masry commander of air force respectively, state media reported.

Morsi also awarded the Order of the Nile medal to former defense minister and commander-in-chief of the armed forces Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, and the Order of the Republic medal to former chief of staff Sami Enan.

In a military leadership reshuffle on Sunday, Morsi dismissed Tantawi and Enan from their posts, but appointed them as advisers to the president. Abdel Fatah el Seisy was appointed as the new defense minister and chief of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), while Sediqi Sobhi became the new chief of staff.

The SCAF said Monday the decisions made by Morsi to reshuffle military leaders were normal.

"The responsibility should be given to a new generation to start a new journey in serving Egypt and to devote themselves for this sacred mission," the SCAF said on its facebook page.

The military leadership reshuffle took place days after a border checkpoint in Sinai was attacked by militants, which left 16 soldiers dead and seven others injured.

Morsi, from the Muslim Brotherhood, assumed office on June 30 as Egypt's first elected civilian president after the fall of ex- President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.
