Burkina Faso president discusses Mali crisis with AFRICOM commander

Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore held talks with the commander of the U.S. Command for Africa (AFRICOM), general Carter Ham, according to a statement obtained here Tuesday from the presidential press service.

After the meeting held Monday in Ouagadougou, the capital of the West African country, Ham told the press that he had discussed with Compaore about the situation in Mali, the position of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the Malian crisis and the military cooperation between Burkina Faso and the United States.

Regarding the prevailing situation in Mali, Ham said it is upon the international community to find a solution to the crisis.

He also hailed the "encouraging progress" made by ECOWAS and its mediator, President Compaore, to resolve the Malian crisis.

On the issue of whether Washington supports a military intervention to remove the separatists in northern Mali, general Ham noted that the current challenges in Mali were political and humanitarian.

AFRICOM was created in 2007 with its headquarters set up in Germany in 2008.
