100 Nigerian, Togolese soldiers arrive in Mali
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-18 18:08

As many as 100 soldiers from Nigeria and Togo have arrived in the Malian capital Bamako to join in the ongoing war against Al-Qaida-linked rebels, the military said on Friday.

The troops include 50 Nigerian soldiers and 50 Togolese soldiers who landed on Thursday night at the Bamako Senou International Airport.

"It is a contingent of 50 Nigerian officers for technical operation. There are also 50 Togolese soldiers who arrived on the same day," a military source told Xinhua on telephone.

The troops are among the first of ECOWAS soldiers to arrive in Mali, where the French army intervened last week to help Mali fight against advancing rebels.

The intervention prompted an earlier than expected deployment of troops from the 15-member West African bloc ECOWAS. Reports had previously said ECOWAS could deploy troops to Mali in September because of training and logistical preparations.
