At least seven people died and five were injured during an attack committed by an armed group during a funeral in southern Mexico, a local Attorney General' s Office said in a statement on Sunday.
The attack occurred on Saturday night during a funeral in Atoyac de Alvarez, 500 km south of Mexico City.
When the people at the funeral were praying, an armed group interrupted violently and started shooting people, said the statement.
The army arrived and blockaded the crime's scene to protect evidence and launched an operation to look for the criminals, but no suspects were been arrested yet.
Mexican Red Cross members moved the injured people to a local hospital, where medical reports said the conditions of the victims were serious but stable.
The motive behind the attack is unknown, although authorities speculated it could be related to feud between organized crime groups.
According to authorities, more than 47,000 people have been killed in Mexico since Dec. 2006 after the government started a campaign to crack down hard on organized crime. |
