U.S. looking at links of attacks to Iran
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-15 08:21

The United States is looking at the links of recent attacks in some places to those bearing the hallmarks of Iran, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Tuesday.

Speaking of the attacks in India, Georgia and Thailand, the spokeswoman noted that "These events do come on the heels of other disrupted attacks targeted at Israel and Western interests, including an Iranian-sponsored attack in Baku, Azerbaijan, and a Hezbollah-linked attack in Bangkok, Thailand, before this."

She said that the U.S. "obviously" condemns the three bomb attacks on Tuesday in downtown Bangkok's Sukhumvit Road related to three Iranians, in which four Thais and one Iranian suspect were injured.

A day earlier, Israeli embassy personnel were targeted in attacks in New Delhi, India and the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

The events "serve as a reminder that a variety of states and non-state actors continue to view international terrorism as a legitimate foreign policy tool, which we consider reprehensible," Nuland said at a regular news briefing.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Iran and Lebanese Shiite armed group Hezbollah for the attacks in India and Georgia, a charge denied by Iran.

Noting the U.S. is awaiting the results of the investigations, Nuland said "We do note that they come on the heels of other disrupted attacks that do have Iranian fingerprints on them."

"We seem to have an uptick in this kind of violence. We're concerned about it. Some of these have been linked to Iran. With regard to these recent ones, we're going to await the results of the investigation, but we are looking at the links."

"We are concerned about use of international terrorism by Iran or by anybody else against Israel or against any other innocents and about a spike in the number of incidents that we've seen," she added.

Thailand boosted security at two airports last month following the arrest of a Swedish-Lebanese terror suspect allegedly linked with Hezbollah, while in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, police detained two people in January who were accused of plotting attacks on prominent foreigners masterminded by a man with alleged links to Iranian intelligence.

The U.S. and the European Union have targeted Iran's central bank and oil exports for sanctions in their continuous efforts to force the Islamic republic to abandon its uranium enrichment activities, prompting threats of reprisals from the country.
