Cuba, WHO vow to strengthen cooperation

HAVANA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Cuban leaders and Margaret Chan, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), have vowed to enhance cooperation.

Chan arrived in Cuba Monday as the head of a WHO delegation to attend a meeting of the agency's regional directors which started on Tuesday. It was held in Havana for the first time.

Chan met Cuban First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura here Thursday to discuss how to promote cooperation between the Cuban Ministry of Public Health and the WHO, according to an official release.

Chan also met Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Thursday. Both sides pledged to further cooperation.

The WHO visitors have toured some Cuban scientific institutions and praised Cuba's health standards, saying the island nation "has a lot to teach the world".

On Friday, Chan is scheduled to chair the closing ceremony of the Congress of Geriatrics and Gerontology in Havana.
