Brush fire shuts U.S. highway near Disney World

A brush fire on Friday shut off a highway in Florida near the Disney World resort, as vacationers get ready to go on the road for Memorial Day getaway.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the brush fire burning off International Drive near the Orange-Osceola county border has prompted officials to shut down Interstate 4 in the attractions area.

The Sentinel said traffic has been stopped on I-4 eastbound at the Osceola Parkway. Just before 3:30 p.m. the traffic was backed up for approximately 5 miles on the eastbound side of the interstate.

State Troopers shut down eastbound I-4 and diverted traffic off onto U.S. Highway 192. Soon after, they shut down westbound I-4.

Local TV reports showed heavy smoke in the International Drive area because of the brush fire. Firefighters from Orange County and Osceola County are battling the blaze.

The fire struck an area near the Walt Disney World Resort just as Memorial Day weekend approaches. They weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
