In the phone call, Obama reiterated his commitment to working in partnership Mexico, and looks forward to advancing common goals, including promoting democracy, economic prosperity, and security in the region and around the globe, in the coming years, the statement said.

The U.S. president "also congratulated the Mexican people who have once again demonstrated their commitment to democratic values through a free, fair and transparent election process," the statement added.

Nieto, the Institutional Revolutionary Party' s (PRI) candidate, won 37.93 to 38.55 percent of the votes. His nearest rival Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, candidate of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), trailed in the second place with around 31 percent, according to initial results issued Sunday by Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute.

Mexican outgoing President Felipe Calderon has congratulated Nieto on being elected the next president and promised that the current government would strengthen cooperation with Nieto's team.

Nieto's victory would mean a return to power for the PRI, which ruled Mexico for seven decades until its defeat in 2000 by the National Action Party's (PAN) Vicente Fox.
