Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff congratulated Mexican President-elect Enrique Pena Nieto on Tuesday in a telephone call, the presidential office said.
Brazil is ready to enhance bilateral strategic ties with Mexico, said Rousseff, who invited Nieto to visit Brazil before his inauguration scheduled for Dec. 1.
Nieto accepted the invitation and is expected to visit several countries before taking office, according to Rousseff's office.
During the 10-minute call, the two did not discuss diplomatic or political issues, it said.
Nieto, from Mexico's once-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), declared victory Sunday night after a preliminary count by Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute (IFE).
The initial results showed that Nieto won 37.8 percent of the vote, about six percentage points more than runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the left-leaning Progressive Movement.
The official outcome is to be announced on Wednesday.
Obrador demanded on Tuesday a full recount of ballots, saying the election was "plagued by irregularities."
Most observers, however, expect the IFE to endorse Nieto's win. |
