A federal worker has been suspended for campaigning for President Barack Obama's reelection effort, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel (OSC) said on Friday.
The OSC, an independent federal investigative and prosecutorial agency, said in a statement that the suspended federal employee is a contracting officer for the General Services Administration.
According to the statement, the employee invited 23 people to an Obama fundraiser from her government office and while on duty. She also distributed Obama campaign material in the workplace and sent an email from her government email account supporting the Obama campaign.
The employee has been put on a 30-day suspension without pay. The OSC said that she has violated the Hatch Act, which restricts political activity of individuals employed or holding office in the executive branch of the federal government.
According to the OSC, an employee covered by the Hatch Act may not, among other things, engage in political activity while on duty or in a federal building or knowingly solicit, accept or receive political contributions. |
