A U.S. woman was sentenced to 80 years in prison Tuesday for the death of a toddler in a fire at her home daycare center last year, U.S. media reported.

Jessica Tata, 24, the owner of a Houston daycare center, also received a 10,000-U.S.-dollar fine for her role in the death of an 16-month-old boy, one of four children who died in the fire after being left unattended at the daycare center, according to the website of the Houston Chronicle.

Tata left the children alone at her daycare center with hot oil on the stove while she went out for shopping last year.

Neighbors said they could hear the children crying inside the burning house but could not reach them. The fire killed four children and seriously injured three others.

Tata was only on trial in the death of 16-month-old Elias Castillo. The others killed were 3-year-old Shomari Leon Dickerson, 20-month-old Kendyll Stradford and 19-month-old Elizabeth Kajoh.

The 24-year-old still faces charges for the three other deaths.

Tata, who was born in the United States but has Nigerian citizenship, fled to Nigeria after the fire accident but was captured about a month later. She has been jailed since returning to the United States.
