U.S. highway deaths hit 6-decade low in 2011

U.S. highway deaths in 2011 declined to the lowest level in more than six decades, extending the historic downward trend in recent years, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Monday.

There were 32,367 highway deaths in 2011, marking the lowest level since 1949 and a 1.9 percent decrease from the prior year, according to the updated data released by NHTSA.

In 2011, the total crashes declined to 5.338 million, with fatal crashes down to 29,757. The fatality rate also hit the lowest point in record, with 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2011, down from 1.11 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2010.

Deaths in crashes involving drunk drivers dropped 2.5 percent in 2011, taking 9,878 lives compared to 10,136 in 2010. But the number of people killed in distraction-affected crashes rose to 3, 331 in 2011.
