U.S. student arrested for threatening to shoot up school, kill teacher

A high school student in the U.S. state of Louisiana was arrested after he threatened to shoot up his school and kill a teacher, state officials said Tuesday.

Leonard F. Jourdan III, of Belle Chasse in Plaquemines Parish, was arrested Monday after police received a report of the threat at around 3:13 p.m., according to the news website NOLA.com.

Because classes had ended for the day at that time and Jourdan was not on school grounds, authorities determined there was no immediate threat, Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Lonnie Greco said in a news release.

Detectives later interviewed Jourdan, 18, who allegedly admitted during a class, he threatened to shoot up the school Friday because he believes the world is coming to an end, Greco said.

Jourdan also allegedly said he believes one of his teachers does not like him, so he planned to tie up the teacher and slit the teacher's wrist.

Jourdan told detectives he made the statements in a joking manner, Greco said. Jourdan is being held at the Belle Chasse Lockup and is set to appear before a magistrate Wednesday, according to the report.

School violence received nationwide attention as a shooting spree on Friday morning at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, in the U.S. state of Connecticut, left 20 children aged 6 to 7 and six adults dead.

U.S. President Barack Obama promised "meaningful action" to prevent similar shooting rampages in the future.
