Afghanistan to open embassy in Greece
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-08 19:14

Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai Sunday said that the country will open in Greece an embassy in near future to help thousands of illegal Afghan migrants to return home.

"At present, as we know, between 25,000 to 30,000 Afghans have illegally been living in Greece and in efforts to help them return home the Afghan Foreign Ministry plans to open the new embassy in Athens this year, possibly by the end to March," Mosazai told reporters at a press briefing.

He said over 50,000 Afghan migrants illegally entered Greece each year on their way to seek a better life in some European countries, and most of them have chosen Greece because its land borders Turkey.

Mosazai also said an Afghan delegation that recently visited Greece has provided some 650 passports to Afghan who were eager to return home.

The Taliban-led insurgency, now in its 11th year, and a protracted war has prevented many Afghans living aboard from returning home.

More than 3.7 million Afghan refugees have been living aboard, mostly in neighboring Pakistan and Iran, according to figures released by Afghan and UN officials.
