7.6-mag quake jolts Sumatra, Indonesia

A powerful 7.6-magnitue quake hit Sumatra, Indonesia early Wednesday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey earlier put the manitude at 7.3. The quake, which hit at 18:37 GMT and with a depth of 33.00 km, was initially determined to be at 2.2860 degrees north latitude and 93. 0960 degrees east longitude, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a destructive widespread tsunami does not exist based on hisotrical date. However, it said: "There is a very small possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a hundred kilomters from the earthquake epicenter."

Authorities in the region near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility," the center said.
