Myanmar president meets U.S. senator
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-18 10:31

Myanmar President U Thein Sein met with visiting United State Senator Mitch McConnell in Nay Pyi Taw Tuesday, the third day of his four-day official visit to the country, according to official sources.

McConnell, the top Republican in the U.S. Senate, also met with speaker of House of Representatives U Shwe Mann and some ministers in the capital.

No details about their respective meetings are immediately available.

During the first two days after his arrival on Sunday, McConnell had met in Yangon Aung San Suu Kyi, the top leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), and other political figures and representatives of ethnic minorities in Yangon.

U Thein Sein and McConnell discussed political reform, bilateral relations and regional security, diplomatic sources said.

McConnell's visit came at a time when the U.S. announced it will exchange ambassadors with Myanmar in recognition of the country's recent major developments, including the release of hundreds of prisoners of conscience and the ceasefire agreement reached between the government and the Kayin National Union (KNU), the country's largest anti-government ethnic armed group.

McConnell's visit followed the ones to Myanmar by U.S. Special Envoy Derek Mitchell last week and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in December last year.
