India's independent election authorities have stopped a convoy of ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, where he has been campaigning for the upcoming polls, media reports said Tuesday.

Robert Vadra, the husband of Sonia's daughter Priyanka, was stopped Monday for flouting poll guidelines by "using more vehicles than the permitted number of 10" during the campaigning, a senior election official told local media.

Robert's wife Priyanka and brother-in-law Rahul Gandhi have been campaigning in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, which goes to seven-phase polls, starting Feb. 8, for the 400 assembly seats.

Robert, a successful businessman, later told local TV NDTV news channel that he was campaigning in Uttar Pradesh "to help Rahul Gandhi".

Asked whether he was interested in joining politics, he responded: "Politics requires full focus... But also being associated with a political family I can't sideline it, or you know, run away from it."

Both Priyanka and Rahul have been on fierce, media-centric election campaign trails in Uttar Pradesh with a firm resolve to topple its chief minister Mayawati.

The powerful Election Commission of India is an autonomous, quasi-judiciary constitutional body which ensures that elections are held free and fair across the country. It has the power of superintendence, direction and control of all elections to the Parliament, state legislatures and of elections to the office of the President and Vice-President.
