The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) official news agency has denounced what it called Japan's ambition to grab the disputed Tok Islets east of the Korean Peninsula.

According to a KCNA commentary published on Wednesday, Japanese authorities recently made reckless remarks about grabbing the Tok Islets, which was "a wanton infringement upon the sovereignty of the Korean nation and an action to provoke a war".

The Tok Islets were part of the territory of Korea from a historical, geographical and legal point of view, the commentary said.

Japan's attempt to grab them was "a wild dream which can never come true", it said.

The commentary urged Japan to draw a serious lesson from the miserable defeat it suffered in the past and honestly apologize for its history of invasion.

With an area of 0.18 square kilometers, the islets are located in the waters on the east of the Korean Peninsula.

The islets are currently under the control of South Korea, but are also claimed by Japan. The DPRK supports South Korea's claim.

The Korean name for the islets has several variations in English, including "Tol-to" and Dok-do", meaning "solitary island." The islets are called Takeshima in Japanese, meaning "bamboo island".

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told parliament recently he would be firm in telling South Korea that Japan could not accept its claim to the islets. Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko officially confirmed he had no intention to retract what the foreign minister said.
